In honor of the 1^st anniversary release date of John's book in polish edition by Anakonda publisher Marta Zalesińska who translated from English to Polish John's memoir gave us an exclusive interview.

Em comemoração ao 1º ano de aniversário do lançamento da edição polonesa do livro de John pela editora Anakonda, Marta Zalesińska quem traduziu as memórias de John do inglês para o polonês nos concedeu uma entrevista exclusiva.

1. Why did you become a translator and what path did you take to get to this point in your career?

I have always wanted to work with language, that's why I decided to study English. However I haven't always been working strictly as a translator-translations have been just a part of my job in sales and marketing department. Then, after two kids I decided to stay at home and I started to think intensely of becoming a full time translator. And of course my biggest dream was to translate literary texts. I needed someone who would give me a chance. I was lucky to find a new publisher Anakonda, who was open to new challenges.

1. Por que você tornou-se tradutora e qual a trajetória que percorreu para chegar neste momento em sua carreira?

Eu sempre quis trabalhar com Língua, é por isso que decidi estudar Inglês. No entanto, eu nem sempre trabalhei estritamente como tradutora, as traduções tem sido apenas uma parte do meu trabalho no departamento de vendas e marketing. Então, depois de ter dois filhos, decidi ficar em casa e comecei a pensar intensamente em tornar-me uma tradutora em tempo integral. E, claro, o meu maior sonho era traduzir textos literários. Eu precisava de alguém quem me desse uma oportunidade. Tive a sorte de encontrar uma editora nova, a Anakonda, quem estava aberta para novos desafios.

2. What has been your biggest professional challenge?

I think it was my first literary translation, my first chance to make my dream come true.

2. Qual foi o seu maior desafio profissional?

Acho que esta minha primeira tradução literária, a minha primeira oportunidade de fazer o meu sonho tornar-se realidade.

3.  What are the best and worst parts of your job?

But there are only the best parts!!! ;-) I can adjust my working hours to my other duties at home. I do not have a bad boss over my head ;-) And I can sip a glass of wine while working ;-)))

3. Quais são as melhores e as piores partes do seu trabalho?

Mas, só há melhores partes!!! ;-) Eu posso ajustar as minhas horas de trabalho de acordo com as minhas outras obrigações em casa. Eu não tenho um chefe cujo relacionamento seria difícil ;-) E posso beber uma taça de vinho, enquanto trabalho ;)))

4. We’ve heard that translation is not about creating an equivalent text from one language to another but that it is a “rewriting of the first text.” Do you agree or disagree by that? Are you a writer, too?

Well, I would say it is both. You have to stick to the original text, but you need to find the best words to say it in your own language. Certainly translation is, in a way, an act of creation.

4.  Soubemos que a tradução não é criar um texto equivalente de uma língua para outra, mas uma "reescrita do primeiro texto." Você concorda ou discorda? Você também é escritora?

Bem, eu diria que são as duas coisas. Você tem que ficar com o texto original, mas você precisa encontrar as melhores palavras para dizê-lo em seu próprio idioma. Com certeza tradução é, de certa forma, um ato de criação.

    5. Talking about translating John Taylor’s book - In the pleasure groove - Love, Death and Duran Duran from English to Polish language. Would mind telling us about your experience during this process?

John Taylor's book  “In the pleasure groove: Love, Death and Duran Duran” is very special to me. This is my dream come true, this is my first literary text that I translated and that was actually published-it has my name in it :-) When I contacted Anakonda (Polish publisher) asking for cooperation I did not know what book I would be given to translate. When I found out it was John's book I was overwhelmed with joy and excitement!!! I was born in mid 70's so Duran Duran is a band from my youth. How cool is that?

Every hour that I spent on this translation was a real pleasure. For a few months I was looking into John's heart and soul and doing my best to translate this wonderful book into Polish. I am very proud of it. The Polish edition was very well-received.

5. Falando sobre a tradução do livro de John Taylor - In the pleasure groove - Love, Death and Duran Duran do Inglês para o Polonês. Você poderia nos contar como foi sua experiência durante esse processo?

O livro de John Taylor "In the pleasure groove - Love, Death and Duran Duran" é muito especial para mim. É o meu sonho que se tornou realidade, o meu primeiro texto literário o qual traduzi que realmente foi publicado e tem meu nome nele.  Quando entrei em contato com a Anakonda (editora polaca) pedindo cooperação eu não sabia qual o livro seria dado para eu traduzir. Quando eu descobri que era o livro do John eu fiquei muito alegre e emocionada!!! Nasci em meados dos anos 70 então o Duran Duran é a banda de minha juventude. Poderia ser melhor?

A cada hora que passei nesta tradução foi um verdadeiro prazer. Por alguns meses, eu estava olhando para o coração e a alma de John e fazendo o meu melhor para traduzir este livro maravilhoso para o polonês. Estou muito orgulhosa dele. A edição polonesa foi muito bem aceita.

6. I supposed you’ve also translated many books in your career. How different is it to translate John Taylor’s memoir?

As I said before, this book is very important to me and it will always have a special place in my heart. Besides, it is a great text. It is honest, warm, funny and sentimental at the same time. Definitely translating an autobiography is something much different from an ordinary biography written by somebody about someone. I am now finishing translation of Steven Spielberg's biography and I must admit it wasn't that much fun ;-)

6. Suponho que você também traduziu muitos livros em sua carreira. Qual a diferença em traduzir as memórias de John Taylor?

Como eu disse antes, este livro é muito importante para mim e sempre terá um lugar especial no meu coração. Além disso, tem um ótimo texto: honesto, afetivo, divertido e sentimental ao mesmo tempo. Definitivamente traduzir uma autobiografia é algo muito diferente de uma biografia comum escrita por alguém sobre alguém. Agora estou terminando a tradução da biografia de Steven Spielberg, e devo admitir que não foi muito divertido;-)

7. What did you learn from his life?

I think that the most important message from John's book is that love, family and your loved ones, as well as passion for music (or anything else) can give you strength to overcome any troubles in your life.

7. O que você aprendeu com a experiência de vida dele?

Eu acho que a mensagem mais importante do livro é que o amor, a família e seus entes queridos, bem como a paixão pela música (ou qualquer outra coisa) podem dar-lhe força para superar todos os problemas em sua vida.
